Grant Overview
Bridging the Digital Divide in Nevada's Faith Communities
In Nevada, the digital divide presents a significant barrier, particularly for older adults and underserved populations who may lack access to technology and online resources. Nearly 20% of Nevadans aged 65 and older do not have access to broadband, limiting their ability to engage with essential services and participate fully in their communities. In addition, many faith-based organizations lack the technological infrastructure necessary to provide comprehensive outreach and services to their congregants and local communities.
Faith communities in Nevada are particularly affected by this digital divide, as older adults in these congregations often miss out on critical connections, information, and resources available online. Many churches struggle to find ways to communicate effectively with their members, as well as to provide programming that keeps pace with technological advancements. This challenge is further exacerbated in rural areas, where even basic internet access can be unreliable.
This grant aims to support digital skills training programs within Nevada’s faith communities, focusing on equipping older adults and underserved groups with essential digital literacy skills. The initiative will empower individuals to navigate online platforms for various purposes, including accessing spiritual resources, participating in virtual worship services, and connecting with community support networks.
The funding will enable faith-based organizations to develop training sessions tailored to the needs of their congregants, ensuring that the content is relevant, engaging, and accessible. By leveraging existing community relationships, churches will also be able to draw on local technology experts to facilitate these workshops, creating a collaborative model that enhances learning opportunities for all involved.
Addressing the digital divide through faith-based initiatives offers a unique opportunity to improve community engagement in Nevada, particularly among older adults and marginalized groups. This initiative sets Nevada apart from states with different demographic challenges and strengthens local ministries by fostering inclusivity and engagement. Ultimately, by providing the necessary skills and support, faith communities can contribute significantly to closing the digital gap, enhancing participation and improving the overall well-being of their congregations.
